Free-to-Play Restrictions Revealed, More on Cartel Coins

If you’ve been holding out for Star Wars: The Old Republic’s Free-to-Play model, or are just curious about how it’s going to work, BioWare gave everyone a taste of what you can expect when the switch is hit this fall. Additionally there is more information available on how you can acquire Cartel Coins, the new in-game currency.

Subscription vs. Free-to-Play
Notably, F2P players will be able to play their class stories completely to level 50, though their character creation choices will be limited. Access to Operations, Warzones, Flashpoints, Space Missions, the Cargo Hold, Inventory space, Crew Skills, Quick Travel, Emergency Fleet Pass, and reviving upon Death are all restricted in some way but are unlocked through the use of Cartel Coins.

A few additions are being made for subscription players as well to allow for the use of Cartel Coins. Additional access to both your Inventory and the Cargo Hold will be available to purchase using Cartel Coins. Additionally, subscription players will be able to bypass the cooldown for the Emergency Fleet Pass by purchasing a consumable item purchased with Cartel Coins.

Cartel Coins Ledger
First of all, if you haven’t found it yet, you can view your current Cartel Coins stash, or your Ledger, on the left hand side of the “My Account” section. You will receive coins for all your previous and current subscription months. If you happened to purchase the Collector’s Edition or Digital Deluxe Edition you will have additional coins, and all active and subscribed players will get a one-time reward at the launch of Free-to-Play.

You can learn more about rewards you can receive by visiting the Free-to-Play FAQ, and check the SWTOR Free-to-Play page to stay up-to-date on the upcoming Free-to-Play model.

I think its a pretty fair set up. A busy person will likely only do 3 fp’s a week anyway. The only thing i dont understand is the purple equipment. f2pers will still be able to gear up oranges but how does tionese and columi work if they drop in fp’s too?

I wonder how these restrictions would apply to already existing characters upon transition. (I suspect that nobody reading this will know the answers, but I’ll post them for the sake of discussion). Would my characters that already have 3 crew skills be required to pay to keep them if I switched to F2P? What about purple gear that is already equipped? In addition, would race options unlocked in the Legacy be restricted in F2P? They also made no mention of GTN access and chat availability in this list (unless I missed it), which are things they have previously mentioned in relation to the F2P transition.
